Plans to acquire the property temporarily, until it can be
turned over to an up-and-running non-profit, are proceeding. The Trust For
Public Land, in its first project involving a Cultural Heritage Monument in Los
Angeles, is involved in the purchase and the search for a qualified occupant.
The house, built in 1907, was home to J.R. Toberman, uncle
of (‘Mr. Hollywood’) C.E. Toberman. The former was twice mayor of Los Angeles
in the 1870s and ’80s and was responsible for turning on the first electric
streetlights here (among many other accomplishments).
If any members know of a well-established non-profit organization that is looking for a structure to purchase, and if a historic home would suit its needs, please call Kay Tornborg at (323) 467-0287.
